What size Drinking Post do I need – 6′ or 8′?
Determining the correct size of Drinking Post to order is determined by the frost line depth in your local area. The frost line is the maximum depth that the ground will freeze in the winter. Proper installation requires that the BASE of The Drinking Post be installed a MINIMUM of 18″ below your local frost line to prevent freezing in the winter.
Once you determine your local frost line depth, add 18″. If this figure is equal to or less than 36″, order a 6′ post. If you local frost line depth, plus 18″ is greater than 36″, order an 8′ Drinking Post.
What is the frost line in my local area?
There are few avenues one can use to determine the frost line in your local area:
1.) Contact your local Building Inspection Department
2.) Contact your counties Water Department.
3.) Any reputable local excavator will be able to quickly tell you what the frost line is in your local area.
Unfortunately there is no web based service or internet site that lists frost line depths across the country. However, it is possible the website for you local municipalities (Water or Building department) may list this information online.
Where can I install The Drinking Post?
The Drinking Post can be installed anywhere you have a pressurized water line with at least 45 psi of pressure. This includes in pastures, barns, paddocks, on a fence line…ANYWHERE.
